Best Screen Recorders 2026: Video Messaging Tools Compared
We rank screen recorders and async video messaging tools using only facts from their own sites: the monthly price of the cheapest paid plan for one person, whether there is a permanent free plan, 4K recording or export, a webcam bubble over the screen, a built-in editor, automatic captions or transcripts, view tracking for shared videos, apps for Windows and Mac, a browser recorder, a mobile app, whether your recordings are used to train AI by default, a SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certificate, single sign-on, the year the company started and a public status page. Every fact links to an official page with a check date. We do not test video quality ourselves and do not use reviews or user scores, and paid placements never change the Score.

Not ranked yet: not enough verified data
These services are known to us, but we haven't verified enough facts to rank them fairly.

Sites marked as closed refuse automated reading (403 error, captcha or a robots.txt ban). We don't bypass such protection, so we can't verify their facts and they are not ranked. This says nothing about their quality. A company can send links to its official pages to [email protected].
How we calculate the Score
30%
Price
Monthly list price in USD of the cheapest plan that one person can buy, with monthly billing: $0 scores 100, $30 or more scores 0 (weight 3). Fully free software with no paid plans counts as $0. Annual-billing prices, one-time licences and promotions are not used; if the official page shows the monthly price only after a script runs, or only in a local currency, the fact stays empty. Also a permanent free plan or free version (weight 2); a free trial does not count.
30%
Recording and sharing
Five checks of equal weight: recording or export in 4K; recording your webcam together with the screen; a built-in editor (at least trimming or cutting); automatic captions or transcripts; and view tracking for shared videos — view counts, viewer insights or a notification when someone watches. A fact shows that the feature exists on some plan, not that the cheapest plan has it.
15%
Platforms
Four checks of equal weight: an app for Windows, an app for macOS, recording from the browser (a Chrome extension or a web recorder) and a mobile app for iOS or Android. More ways to record means fewer installs for you and the people you send videos to.
15%
Privacy and security
Three checks of equal weight: the vendor says your recordings are not used to train its AI models by default — no training at all, or only if you opt in; a SOC 2 audit or ISO 27001 certificate stated on an official page; and single sign-on (SAML or similar) on some plan. Statements that cover only third-party AI providers are not enough. We record the vendor's statement; we do not audit it.
10%
Track record
How long the company or product has been running: 15 years or more scores 100 (weight 1), and whether it publishes a public status page (weight 1).
How to choose a screen recorder
Message or production?
For quick updates, bug reports and sales videos, look for instant share links, view tracking and a browser extension. For tutorials and courses, look for a full editor, 4K export and captions.
Check the free-plan limits
Free plans limit minutes per recording, the number of stored videos or the resolution, and some add a watermark. Several also allow only personal use — read the terms before using a free plan for client work.
Make sure it runs where you record
Some tools are Mac-only, some work only in Chrome, and some have no mobile app. Check every computer and phone you will record on.
Protect what you show on screen
Screen recordings often capture passwords, customer data and private messages. Use blur or region capture, set link privacy or expiry, and check whether the vendor uses recordings for AI training and offers SSO for your team.
Frequently asked questions
Which screen recorder is best?
The tool in first place has the highest Score under our open method, but the Score does not measure video quality or how well a tool fits your work. Decide first whether you need quick video messages with a link or polished edited videos, check that the tool runs on your computer, then try the free plan or trial.
How do you compare prices?
We take the cheapest plan that one person can buy, with monthly billing, in US dollars, as shown on the vendor's official pricing page. Annual billing is usually much cheaper; the note on each tool's page gives the annual price when we saw it. Team plans with a minimum number of seats are not used. One-time licences are shown separately and do not enter the Score.
Why is the price empty for some tools?
Some pricing pages show only the annual price, show the monthly price only after a script runs, or show prices in a local currency to our checking server. We record only what is readable on the official page in US dollars, so the fact stays empty and lowers data completeness. Desktop programs sold as yearly or lifetime licences have no monthly price either. A few sites closed their pages to our automated check; those tools are listed outside the ranking.
Are free tools like OBS Studio treated fairly?
Free software counts as $0 and gets full points for price and free plan. But the Score also checks sharing links, view tracking, captions and account security, which desktop programs without a cloud do not offer, so their data completeness is often below the threshold and they are listed outside the ranking. That reflects a different kind of product, not a worse recorder.
What does "not used for AI training by default" mean?
The vendor's official page says your recordings are not used to train its AI models, or only with your explicit opt-in. If we found no such statement, the fact stays empty — it does not mean the vendor trains on your videos.
