Best Language Learning Apps and Online Tutors 2026: Independent Ranking

We compare language learning apps and online tutor platforms only by verifiable facts: how many languages you can learn, whether there are live lessons with a human teacher and speaking practice, whether levels map to the CEFR scale, whether you can start for free and what the cheapest paid plan costs, whether the platform vets its teachers and offers refunds, how the app is rated on the App Store and whether the company publishes efficacy research. Every fact links to an official page and carries the date we checked it. We do not grade course quality by hand, and paid placements never change the Score.

Not ranked yet: not enough verified data

These services are known to us, but we haven't verified enough facts to rank them fairly.

How we calculate the Score

30%

Learning

How many languages you can learn according to the service itself (logarithmic, full score from 40), whether there are real-time lessons with a human teacher, automated speaking practice (speech recognition or an AI conversation partner), and whether levels map to the CEFR scale (A1–C2) or a level certificate is issued.

25%

Price

Whether you can start for free (free plan, free trial or trial lesson) and the monthly price of the cheapest paid plan billed monthly, in US dollars as shown by the service itself: $0 scores 100, $30 or more scores 0. For tutor marketplaces we use the minimum lesson price instead of a subscription, if the platform states one.

15%

Guarantees

Whether a refund policy is published (terms or help pages on the company's site) under which money is refunded in at least some cases. We show teacher vetting on the profile but do not score it, because apps without human teachers cannot have it.

20%

User ratings

The app's average rating on the US App Store from Apple's official API: 3 stars or less scores 0, 5 stars scores 100; ratings with few reviews weigh less (logarithmic, full weight from 1 million ratings).

10%

Transparency

Age of the company (15+ years gets full score) and whether the company publishes learning efficacy research, its own or commissioned from independent researchers.

How we rank

How to choose a language app or online school

  1. Define your goal

Basic phrases and vocabulary are enough for a trip; work or an exam needs a specific CEFR level. Your goal decides what to choose: an app for daily practice, a course with levels or lessons with a teacher.

  2. Start for free

Almost every service has a free plan, a free trial or a trial lesson. Study for a week or two and check whether the format suits you and whether you stay motivated to practise regularly.

  3. Add speaking practice

You learn to speak by speaking. If your app has no live lessons, add sessions with a teacher or a language exchange at least once a week.

  4. Check subscription and refund terms

An annual plan is cheaper per month, but you pay upfront. Read how to cancel auto-renewal and whether you can get your money back if the service doesn't suit you.

  5. Choose a teacher carefully

On tutor platforms, watch the teacher's intro video, read reviews and check their experience; start with a trial lesson. Check the cancellation and rescheduling rules before paying for a package.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best language learning app right now?

The service ranked first has the highest Score under our open methodology. The best choice depends on your goal: apps suit regular self-study, while live lessons with a teacher help most with speaking. Check the factor bars and pick the leader in what matters to you.

Can you learn a language with an app alone?

Apps help with vocabulary, grammar and a daily study habit. Fluent speaking usually needs practice with real people: lessons with a teacher, language exchange or travel. That is why we show separately whether a service offers live lessons and speaking practice.

What are CEFR levels?

The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) has six levels from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery). When a course maps to the CEFR, it is easier to see what you will reach and to compare it with what an employer, university or visa requires.

Why is the price per lesson for tutor platforms?

On marketplaces such as italki and Preply each teacher sets their own price and there is no platform subscription. We use the minimum lesson price only when the platform itself states it; otherwise we leave the field empty rather than calculating it ourselves.

How do you rank language learning services?

By facts from official pages, each with a link and check date, plus the App Store rating from Apple's official API, combined by a fixed, public formula. We do not grade course quality by hand, so the ranking is reproducible and cannot be bought.
