Car rental: rankings by country 2026

We compare companies that rent cars by the day to private customers without a driver, from their own fleet: local rental firms and national franchises of international brands with their own site and legal entity in the country. Car-sharing apps with per-minute rates, long-term leasing and subscriptions, peer-to-peer platforms and booking aggregators are not included. We use only facts anyone can check on the company's own website and in the App Store: whether it names its legal entity with a registration number, whether it publishes the deposit, the published daily price of its cheapest economy car for a three-day rental (as a percentage of the country's reference price), whether the base price includes damage cover for the rental car itself, whether mileage is unlimited, whether a booking can be cancelled free of charge, online booking, airport pick-up, the number of rental locations and the App Store rating of its app. Every fact links to its source with the date we checked it. Customer reviews, complaint counts and media rankings are not used, and we do not rent cars ourselves for testing. The ranking is not advice to choose a particular company. Places are not for sale.

Frequently asked questions

Which car rental company is the best?

The company in first place has the highest Score under our open methodology. This is not advice: look at what matters to you. For a long trip, unlimited mileage matters most; if you want to know the worst case, compare the deposit and what the base price covers; if your plans may change, look for free cancellation.

Where does the data come from?

From the companies' official websites (rental terms, price lists, FAQ, contacts and legal details), from official registers where they are readable, and from the App Store. Every fact links to its page with the date we checked it.

How do you compare prices?

We take the published daily price of the cheapest economy-class car for a three-day rental, including VAT and without promo codes, and show it as a percentage of the country's reference price (the median of the prices we collected at launch). The original price is on the company card. Prices calculated only inside a booking engine are not compared.

What counts as insurance included in the price?

Only cover for damage to the rental car itself: CASCO, a collision damage waiver (CDW) or a stated limit of the renter's liability, even with an excess. Compulsory third-party motor insurance is required by law for every car, so it does not set companies apart and is not counted.

Can a company buy a place in the ranking?

No. The Score is calculated with the same formula for every company. Paid placements, if they ever appear, will be a separate block labelled as advertising and never affect the Score.
