Best Freelance Platforms 2026: Independent Ranking
We compare freelance marketplaces from both sides of the deal: what the freelancer gives up in fees and what the client pays on top, whether the money is held by the platform until the work is accepted, whether the platform settles disputes and checks identities, how the app is rated on the App Store, how long the company has been around and whether its shares are publicly listed. Fees are compared as a share of a typical USD 500 order with a new client. Every fact links to an official page and carries a check date. We do not judge individual freelancers, and paid placements never change the Score.

Not ranked yet: not enough verified data
These services are known to us, but we haven't verified enough facts to rank them fairly.
- 99designs (40% backed by facts)
- Codeable (60% backed by facts)
- Fiverr (site closed to automated checks, )
- Toptal (23% backed by facts)
- Upwork (site closed to automated checks, )
Sites marked as closed refuse automated reading (403 error, captcha or a robots.txt ban). We don't bypass such protection, so we can't verify their facts and they are not ranked. This says nothing about their quality. A company can send links to its official pages to [email protected].
How we calculate the Score
35%
Fees
The standard fee the freelancer pays (weighted double) and the fee the client pays on top, as a percentage of a USD 500 order with a new client: 0% scores 100, 20% or more scores 0. If the fee is tiered, we take the first tier, the one that applies to a new client; flat fees per order are converted into a share of USD 500. Paid bids, subscriptions and withdrawal fees are listed on the profile but not counted.
35%
Deal protection
Whether the client's money is held by the platform (escrow, safe deal, milestones) and released to the freelancer only after the work is accepted (weighted double), whether the platform reviews disputes between the client and the freelancer, and whether it verifies users' identity documents.
10%
User ratings
Average App Store rating of the platform's app from Apple's official API (US store; the home-market store if the app is not available in the US): 3 stars or lower scores 0, 5 stars scores 100; a rating with few reviews weighs less (logarithmic, full weight from 1 million ratings).
20%
Track record
Company age (15+ years earns full marks, weighted double) and whether the company's shares trade on a stock exchange, which means audited public reporting. The year comes from the platform's own website or filings.
How to choose a freelance platform
Count the full cost
Add up the fee taken from the freelancer, the fee the client pays on top, and the extras: paid bids or responses, subscriptions, withdrawal fees. A platform with a 0% commission may charge for every application instead.
Work only through safe payments
Use escrow, a safe deal or funded milestones, and do not agree to pay or get paid outside the platform: off-platform deals lose payment protection and often break the platform's rules.
Read the dispute rules before you start
Find out how long the client has to review the work, when the money is released automatically and what evidence arbitration needs. Keep all communication and files in the platform's chat.
Pick a platform that fits your field and market
Global marketplaces have more clients, but competition and fees are higher. Niche platforms for developers or designers screen talent and pay better, while regional platforms work in local currency and language.
Build trust on your profile
Verify your identity, fill in the portfolio and start with small orders to collect reviews. Clients check ratings and verification badges first.
Frequently asked questions
Which freelance platform is the best right now?
The platform in first place has the highest Score under our open methodology. The best choice depends on your side of the deal and your field: freelancers care most about the fee and payment protection, clients about the fee on top and dispute rules. Regional platforms often have more clients in their own language. Check the factor bars and pick the leader on what matters to you.
How much do freelance platforms charge?
Usually from 0% to 20% of the order for the freelancer and from 0% to about 20% on top for the client. Many platforms lower the fee as you earn more with the same client, so we compare the first tier on a USD 500 order. Paid bids, subscriptions and withdrawal fees come on top: you will find them in each platform's notes.
What is escrow or a safe deal?
The client pays the platform before the work starts, and the platform releases the money to the freelancer after the client accepts the work or after the review period ends. If something goes wrong, the platform's arbitration decides who gets the money. On job boards without escrow, the client and the freelancer settle payments directly, at their own risk.
Why are Upwork and Fiverr not in the ranking?
Their websites block automated visitors with a check page, and we do not bypass such protection. Without their official fee and help pages we only have the App Store rating and their stock exchange filings, which is not enough data for a fair Score. Their profiles stay on the site and will be ranked once the facts can be confirmed from official pages.
How do you rank freelance platforms?
By facts from official pages, each with a link and a check date, plus the App Store rating from Apple's official API, using a fixed, open formula. We do not grade freelancers or read reviews by hand, so the ranking is reproducible and cannot be bought.
