Moving companies in the US 2026: ranked by verified facts

A ranking of US van lines and moving companies, built only on verifiable facts: the legal entity with its U.S. DOT number, membership of a trade body as stated by the firm, valuation coverage, published terms and prices, packing, storage and moves abroad. Many van lines work through local agents, so the firm you meet may be a separate business.

Not ranked yet: not enough verified data

These services are known to us, but we haven't verified enough facts to rank them fairly.

Sites marked as closed refuse automated reading (403 error, captcha or a robots.txt ban). We don't bypass such protection, so we can't verify their facts and they are not ranked. This says nothing about their quality. A company can send links to its official pages to [email protected].

How we calculate the Score

30%

Legal entity and trade body

Whether the website names the legal entity behind the brand, with a registration number where it gives one, and whether the firm states membership of a removals trade body such as BAR, AMÖ, FIDI or IAM.

30%

Protection of your goods

Whether the firm states that goods are insured during the move or offers transit cover, and whether it publishes its contract terms before you book.

20%

Transparency

Whether the firm publishes real price figures (hourly rate, fixed price, starting price or a price guide by home size) and a complaints route, including an independent one.

10%

Range of services

Whether the firm offers packing by its own crews, international moves and storage.

10%

Experience

The year the firm started. The score rises with age up to 50 years.

How we rank

How to choose a moving company

  1. Find out who you are contracting with

Look for the legal entity and its registration number on the website or in the quote. A brand name and a mobile number are not enough if something goes wrong.

  2. Ask about cover for your goods

Ask what is covered in transit and in storage, up to what value, and whether packing you did yourself is included. Liability under a contract and insurance of your goods are different things.

  3. Get a survey and a written quote

A survey, in person or by video, makes the volume clear. Ask whether the price is fixed or hourly, and what stairs, long carries and parking add.

  4. Read the terms before you pay

Check the deposit, cancellation, deadlines for claims and limits per item. Ask for the terms if they are not on the website.

  5. Check the trade body

If a firm names a trade body, confirm it with that body. Membership usually brings a code of practice and a dispute service.

  6. Compare like with like

Compare quotes for the same volume, crew size and services. A low hourly rate with a long minimum order can cost more than a fixed price.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between released value and full value protection?

As Wheaton and Bekins describe it, released value is the basic option included at no charge, and it pays by weight rather than by what the item is worth: Wheaton's example is a 10-pound item covered up to $6.00. Full value protection is an option that gives a higher level of compensation. Ask your mover for the price and the limits.

Is valuation coverage the same as insurance?

No. Wheaton describes released value as liability coverage, and separate third-party insurance is a different product. In this ranking the cover fact means the firm states valuation coverage or insurance for your goods. Ask which of the two you are getting.

What do the DOT and MC numbers mean here?

They are the numbers the firm prints on its own website, and we show them as the sign of a named legal entity. We did not check them in a government register, so look the numbers up yourself before you book.

Why are prices blank for US van lines?

The firms in this list quote after an estimate and publish no figures for a move, so the price fact stays blank. A blank fact is not a claim that a firm hides its prices.

Why are some large movers missing?

We read only sites that allow it. Two Men and a Truck refused our bot, and the terms of United Van Lines and Mayflower forbid automated data gathering, so we did not collect them. Their absence says nothing about their quality.
