Used car sites in the UK 2026: a ranking built on verified facts
A ranking of UK classifieds, online used-car dealers and car-buying services built only on verifiable facts from their official pages: whether a private seller can sell without paying a fee, whether there is a free valuation and a vehicle history check, whether there is a money-back guarantee or other buyer protection, whether sellers are verified, whether there is anti-fraud advice, whether the website names the company with its Companies House number, the year it started and the App Store rating of its app. Sites that answered our bot with an anti-bot challenge are in the not-ranked list. Every fact links to its source with the date we checked it. Places are not for sale.

Not ranked yet: not enough verified data
These services are known to us, but we haven't verified enough facts to rank them fairly.
- AA Cars (48% backed by facts)
- Auto Trader (site closed to automated checks, )
- CarGurus UK (site closed to automated checks, )
- Cazoo (site closed to automated checks, )
- Motorpoint (site closed to automated checks, )
- cinch (57% backed by facts)
- eBay Motors UK (site closed to automated checks, )
Sites marked as closed refuse automated reading (403 error, captcha or a robots.txt ban). We don't bypass such protection, so we can't verify their facts and they are not ranked. This says nothing about their quality. A company can send links to its official pages to [email protected].
How we calculate the Score
20%
Transparency
Whether the website names the operator's legal entity with its registration number (in the imprint, terms or contacts), and the year the site or its company started.
25%
For sellers
Whether a private seller can list a car (or sell it to the service) without paying, and whether the site offers a market price estimate for a car.
40%
Buyer safety
Whether a buyer can get a vehicle history report by VIN or plate, whether the site offers a safe deal, escrow, money-back period or other stated buyer protection, whether it verifies sellers, and whether it publishes anti-fraud advice.
15%
App
The App Store rating of the site's own iOS app, weighted by the number of ratings.
How to buy a used car safely online
Check the car in the official register
Before paying anything, run the official check of the country by VIN or plate: registration, restrictions, theft, pledge or inspection history. A paid history report from the site is a supplement, not a replacement.
Compare the VIN everywhere
The VIN in the ad, in the registration document and on the car itself must match. A seller who will not show the VIN or the documents before the viewing is a reason to walk away.
Never pay a deposit to a stranger
The most common fraud is a request for an advance payment to "reserve" the car or for delivery. Pay only at the handover or through the site's own safe deal, never by a link received in a chat.
Have the car inspected
An independent inspection at a garage or a diagnostic centre will show accident repairs, rust, engine and gearbox faults and paint thickness. Test-drive the car cold.
Check the market price
A price far below similar cars is a warning sign. Use the site's price estimate and compare several ads with the same year, engine and mileage.
Put the sale in writing
Sign a written sale contract with the VIN, price, date and both parties' details, get the registration documents and keys, and complete the change of keeper as the law of your country requires.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check a used car's MOT history?
Use the free GOV.UK service "Check the MOT history of a vehicle". It shows whether the vehicle passed or failed each MOT, the mileage recorded when it was tested and when the next MOT is due. For cars, results go back to 2005.
What does DVLA hold about a vehicle?
The GOV.UK vehicle enquiry service shows, among other things, whether the vehicle is taxed and when the tax expires, whether it is SORN, when its MOT expires, the date it was first registered and the date of the last V5C log book. Compare these with what the seller tells you.
How do I make sure the car is not stolen?
GOV.UK guidance "Check a used vehicle you're buying" says to check that the V5C has a "DVL" watermark and that its serial number is not between BG8229501 and BG9999030, or BI2305501 and BI2800000; if it is, the V5C might be stolen and you should call the police. Also compare the VIN on the V5C with the car.
Has the car been recalled?
The GOV.UK service "Check if a vehicle, part or accessory has been recalled" shows manufacturer recalls for serious safety issues. Ask the seller to prove that recall work has been done.
Does an official check show outstanding finance?
No. The GOV.UK services do not show finance owed on a car, and some sites' free history checks do not cover it either. If the car may be on finance, use a paid history check that includes finance and keep the result.
