How it is calculated

Financed amount = price × (1 − down payment %). Payments are an annuity: payment = (financed amount − residual × (1 + r)^−n) × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n), where r is the monthly rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100) and n the term in months. The residual value is paid at the end, so the payments cover only its discounted value.

Total = down payment + all payments + residual. Cost increase = (total − price) ÷ price ÷ (term ÷ 12) × 100: how many percent a year leasing costs more than paying cash.

The price is entered with VAT, as the seller quotes it. "Without VAT" divides every amount by (1 + VAT rate) — the view of a VAT-registered business that reclaims the tax. The cost increase does not change. Insurance, registration and lessor fees are not included.

Frequently asked questions

What VAT applies to lease payments in Spain?

The standard VAT (IVA) rate is 21% (Spanish Tax Agency). The calculator applies it to every payment.

What is the cost increase of a lease?

It is what you pay above the asset price, per year: (total − price) ÷ price ÷ years × 100. It is a simple way to compare offers from different lessors with the same down payment, term and residual.

Why is the cost increase lower than the lessor's rate?

The rate is charged on the outstanding balance, which falls with every payment, while the cost increase divides the whole extra cost by the full price, down payment included. So it is usually below the annual rate.

How can I lower the monthly payment?

Pay a larger down payment, choose a longer term or a lessor with a lower rate. A larger residual also lowers the payment, but you pay that amount at the end.
