How it is calculated
Dogs (AKC guide, medium-sized dog): the first year equals about 15 human years, the second about 9 more, and each year after that about 5.
Cats (International Cat Care): the first two years equal 24 human years, and each year after that about 4. The result is an estimate: size, breed and health change how fast an animal ages.
Frequently asked questions
Is one dog year really seven human years?
No. That rule is a myth: dogs mature fastest in the first two years. The AKC guide gives about 15 human years for the first year and 9 for the second.
Do big dogs age faster?
Yes, large breeds usually age faster than small ones. The calculator uses the guide for a medium-sized dog, so treat the result as an approximation.
