Renovation companies in the UK 2026: a fact-based ranking
A ranking of UK companies that carry out house and flat renovation and extensions themselves, using only facts from official sites and Companies House. The market is fragmented into thousands of local builders, we found companies through search, and these are not necessarily the market leaders. We look at the guarantee the company itself states, a written contract or fixed price, the company number, liability insurance, trade body membership, prices and completed work. A guarantee stated as "up to N years" does not count. Lead-generation sites and directories are excluded. The ranking does not assess any particular job. Compare the Score only within the UK. The Score is not for sale; paid placements, if they ever appear, will be a separate labelled block.

How we calculate the Score
30%
Contract and guarantee
The guarantee on work stated by the company itself (scale up to 60 months, the term for general finishing work) and a written contract or fixed estimate. A statutory term mentioned in an article is not a company statement.
25%
Legal entity and insurance
Whether the full legal entity with a registry number is given, whether liability or works insurance is stated, and whether membership of a trade body is named: a chamber, union or self-regulatory organisation, in Germany an entry in the craft register. A licence or attestation alone does not count as membership.
20%
Transparency
Whether a price list or price per square metre is published and whether completed work is shown with photos or descriptions.
15%
Experience
Year founded (scale up to 30 years) and completed projects as stated by the company (logarithmic scale up to 10,000). The numbers are as stated; we do not verify them on site.
10%
Service
A published complaints procedure and the number of general contact channels out of four: phone, e-mail, form or chat, office.
How to choose a renovation company
Check the legal entity
Find the name and registry number on the site and compare them with the state register. The same company must appear in the contract.
Ask for a contract and estimate
The estimate should be itemised, and the contract should state deadlines, payment stages and how the price can change. Do not pay the full amount up front.
Read the guarantee terms
Ask about the term, what it covers and who fixes defects. Keep acceptance records and all documents for materials.
See real work
Ask to see a recent job or to speak to past customers. A site portfolio only shows what the company chose to show.
Frequently asked questions
What does first place mean?
The first-placed company has the highest Score under our open methodology among companies in that country. It is not an assessment of any particular job or advice to choose it.
Why do contract and guarantee weigh the most?
They set what you can demand if the work is poor or the estimate grows. That is why they make up 30% of the Score.
How does a company guarantee differ from a statutory one?
Your statutory rights apply whatever a company's site says. We count only the term the company itself states for its work; a summary of the law in an article does not count.
Why are there no reviews?
Reviews are hard to verify and badges from paid lists can be bought. We show only facts from official sites and registers.
Why is data missing for some companies?
If a fact was not on the official site, or the site is closed to automated checks, we show "Not verified" and award no points. It does not mean the company lacks it.
Can I compare companies from different countries?
No. Laws, registers and prices differ, so the Score only makes sense within one country.
